Let me tell you why I think birthdays are important.
It’s not for the presents, cake or the party. In fact, i dont even like parties. But it’s for the fact that, birthdays bring people together. And as we become more and more consumed with our own ambitions, those times get far and few in between.
It’s a time to let people know how much they mean to you and to understand what we mean to others. A birthday is a opportunity life gives us, to show how much we treasure a loved one. Much too often, when we lose someone, we find ourselves missing these times. We find ourselves in bitter regret for having not spent enough time with that person or longing for that last chance to show how much you care. In the end, it’s these moments that occasions like birthdays create that we remember and keep close to our hearts.
So don’t tell me it’s just a birthday. It means much more than that to me. I used to think the same. It’s just a birthday, just another day, another will come. That’s the thing you see, there's no guarantee of you being here next year. For those of you who don’t care much for birthdays or anniversaries, you may think I’m being dramatic and the sad truth is that I probably will never be able to convince you. You’ll have to learn it the hard way. But I sure hope not. It took a more than I cared to lose for me to re-evaluate the little things in life.
Sure, the argument can be made, that these things shouldn’t only be done on special occasions. But we forget don’t we? We always forget.
So that's why I think birthdays are important.
And I really wish that you could be here to spend mine with me.
